Result: Atletico Madrid 1-1 Deportivo Alaves
Date: 21 August 2016
Venue: Vicente Calderon
Newly promoted Deportivo Alaves netted in stoppage time to earn a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon on Sunday evening.
Los Rojiblancos were without the services of star striker, Antoinne Griezmann, which allowed Gameiro to make his debut for the Madrid outfit.
Diego Simeone's charges dominated the encounter from the onset, although they struggled to carve out chances in the opening 20 minutes.
The hosts squandered a glorious chance to go ahead after 35 minutes when Gameiro blazed over the crossbar from six-yards out.
Despite Atletico's dominance, the score remained goalless as the sides entered the halftime break.
Simeone brought on Fernando Torres at the start of the second half, before introducing new signing Nicolas Gaitan just before the hour mark.
Torres carved out a glorious chance after 70 minutes when the Spaniard picked out Godin, who sent his effort over the crossbar from six-yards out.
Gameiro should have handed Atletico the lead in the 85th minute, but Pachecho pulled off a double save to deny the Frenchman from point-blank range.
The home side were awarded a penalty in stoppage time when Torres was brought down in the box. Gameiro stepped up and made no mistake from the spot,1-0.
However, Alaves clinched a point with a final kick of the game as Manu Garcia rifled home a superb effort from distance to ensure the newly promoted outfit earn a share of the spoils.
