The hosts were without the services defender Ozan Kabak, who continues to be linked with a return to the Premier League as the begin their journey back to the top-flight.

Hamburg handed a debut to new striker Robert Glatzel as well as Ludovit Reis and Sebastian Schonlau, while former Hamburg striker Simon Terrode lined up for his Schalke debut.

Terrode came back to haunt his former side as early as the seventh minute after putting Schalke ahead after being set up by strike partner Marius Butler.

The visitors had the perfect chance to get level on 28 minutes after being awarded a penalty, but Glatzel failed to convert from 12-yards out on his debut.

Hamburg were unable to find a way back into the contest in the first half, but Glatzel atoned for his miss eight minutes into the second stanza with his first goal for the club.

Belgian Pro League
Standard Liege 1-1 Genk

KRC Genk struck late in the second half to earn themselves a point at Standard Liege in their Belgian Pro League opener.

Liege did not make any big signings ahead of the new campaign, although they did bid farewell to Zinho Vanheusden who joined Serie A champions Inter Milan.

Genk, meanwhile, handed a start to new signing Mujaid Sadick in the defence while fellow new additions Simen Juklerod and Carel Eiting started on the bench.

The visitors enjoyed most of the possession in the first half and looked livelier going forward, with Paul Onuacho passing up two good chances in the opening 20 minutes.

Leige had to wait until the final five minutes for an opening as Cimirot looked to pick out Jackson Muleka, but Genk managed to clear with the Congolese striker lurking on goal.

The hosts did get their reward in the second half though, with Konstantinos Laifis getting his first goal of the season after being set up by Hugo Siquet.

When it seemed as if the hosts were going to walk away with the spoils, Genk popped up with the equaliser in the second minute of time added on thanks to Theo Bongonda's first goal of the campaign.
