Defending champions Spain were dumped out of Euro 2016, after losing 2-0 to Italy in their Round of 16 tie on Monday evening.
Italy nearly broke the deadlock after eight minute, when Alessandro Florenzi's cross with met a well-placed header by Graziano Pelle, but David De Gea produced a stunning save to tip the ball out for a corner.
The Azzuri created another opening in the 24th minute as Mattia De Sciglio's cross found Marco Parolo, who headed just wide of the upright.
Italy's pressure paid off in the 32nd minute, as Eder forced De Gea into a low save, which deflected the ball into the path of Chiellini, who poked into an empty.
The Spanish number one was called into action just before the break, as he produced another fine save to keep out Emanuele Giaccherini's curling effort from close range.
Spain, meanwhile, struggled to get their passing game going and failed to register a single effort on target in the first half.
La Roja had De Gea to thank for keeping Italy's lead down, as the Manchester United man pulled off another save to deny Eder, who was through on goal.
Vicente Del Bosque's had a chance to level matters in the 70th minute when Sergio Ramos rose well to meet Cesc Fabregas' corner, but his header sailed well over the crossbar.
Gianluigi Buffon came to Italy's rescue in the 76th minute, as the veteran was forced into a fine diving save by Gerard Pique.
Del Bosque threw on the likes of Lucas Vazquez and Pedro Rodriguez, as Spain went in search of an equaliser in the final stages of the half.
However, Italy sealed the win in stoppage time, as Matteo Darmian's deflected cross found Pelle, who volleyed home from six-yards out.
