England coach Roy Hodgson sounded a little deluded speaking after his side's 2-1 loss to Uruguay in a Group D, 2014 FIFA World Cup match on Thursday, saying that he felt his side contained Luis Suarez quite well.
Suarez may have only been returning from injury, but the Uruguayan front man bagged a brace to virtually extinguish England's hopes of qualifying for the Last 16 of the World Cup.
The Liverpool man scored his first goal in the 40th minute after sloppy defending from England, losing the ball on the half way line, allowed Edison Cavani to cross for an unmarked Suarez to head home.
He then stole victory for the South American side in the 85th minute after a route one ball from the Uruguayan goalkeeper was flicked on by Steven Gerrard as he attempted to clear, which allowed Suarez to get in behind the Three Lions defence and he made no mistake with just Joe Hart to beat.
Hodgson, though, feels his side contained Suarez for the majority of the game and instead opted to rest his defeat on the excuse, 'When the World Cup is played on the South American continent, South American teams generally do well'.
"I think we controlled Suarez very well in general play," said Hodgson.
"We kept him quiet for long periods.
"He was voted the player of the year [in England] by everyone.
"Today he was coming back from injury, so he was quieter than usual. But he got two chances and being the top player that he is, he put them away.
"But the second goal was an unfortunate flick off Gerrard's head.
"We were playing most of the game in the Uruguay half, playing well, then they got that second goal.
"When the World Cup is played on the South American continent, South American teams generally do well."
The result sees England at the bottom of Group D and if the Costa Rica versus Italy match on Friday ends in a draw it will signal the end of their 2014 World Cup.
