France coach Didier Deschamps has explained his surprise decision to recall Real Madrid Karim Benzema after his six-year absence from the team.
Benzema was snubbed for international duty after his alleged involvement in a sex-tape scandal with former Les Blues teammate Mathieu Valbuena.
However, the Real Madrid striker will now represent the world champions for the first time since 2015 after making peace with manager Deschamps.
"I needed this chat, he needed this chat. I don't want to make this a specific case.
"As national team boss, I have always look beyond my personal case. My responsibility is important, but it is bigger than me."
When asked if Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud's spot was now under threat, Deschamps added: "Not necessarily, there is always competition. They were in the squad together for three years."
Benzema has notched up 81 appearances for the French national side to date, scoring 27 goals since making his debut for Les Bleus in 2007.
