The Red Devils confirmed that Ronaldo will be wearing the famous No. 7 jersey, despite Cavani having already featured in one Premier League game this season.
Cavani will now wear the No. 21 shirt as he does for Uruguay after Daniel James left the club to complete a move to fellow Premier League outfit Leeds United.
There have been a few of players who have failed to live up to the hype of wearing the famous shirt since Ronaldo's departure, including Antonio Valencia, Memphis Depay and Alexis Sanchez.
Ronaldo has now thanked his new Red Devils teammate for giving up the number for his second stint with the Manchester outfit.
"I was not sure if it would be possible to have the number seven shirt again," Ronaldo said, as per the Daily Mirror.
"So I would like to say a huge thank you to Edi for this incredible gesture."
Ronaldo is likely to make his return to action for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side against Newcastle United next weekend.
