The game was decided on penalties after it ended 0-0 after the 90 minutes. The opening exchanges failed to provide any meaningful goal-mouth action, as both sides were happy to pass the ball around rather and feel each other out.
Pirates duo Oupa Manyisa and Sfisio Meyni were pulling the strings for the Buccaneers in the first half, with Tlou Segolela and Thabo Matlaba providing a threat down the left flank. And it was Pirates who had the better of the chances, as Happy Jele headed over from six-yards out in the 37th minute, before Kermit Erasmus forced Itumeleng Khune into a fine save three minutes later. Willard Katsande came close in the 48th minute, as his long range troubled Senzo Meyiwa, who managed to parry the effort away. George Maluleka should have opened the scoring in the the 66th minute from the penalty spot after George Lebese had been brought down by Rooi Mahamutsa, but the midfielder rifled his spot-kick against crossbar. Despite the openness of the game, neither side could break the deadlock in the remaining 24 minutes, with the only Matlaba coming close in the 92nd minute.
