Carabao Cup Report: West Ham United v Manchester City 27 October 2021

There will be a different name on the Carabao Cup trophy for the first time since 2015 after holders Manchester City were eliminated by West Ham United on penalties.

Result: West Ham United 0-0 Manchester City (West Ham won 5-4 on penalties)

Date: 27 October 2021

Venue: London Stadium

Pep Guardiola handed a start to young striker Cole Palmer, while John Stones, Zackary Steffen and Oleksandr Zinchenko also came into the City line-up.

The Citizens enjoyed most of the possession as as expected but they had a tough time after finding away past Alphonse Areola, who did well to keep out Palmer's strike in the 25th minute.

Riyad Mahrez went close to pull the visitors ahead 10 minutes later after getting on the end of a Ilkay Gundogan's lofted pass, but the Algeria saw his volley sail wide of the mark.

The first half did end goalless, although Nathan Ake should have changed that on the stroke of halftime after he steered his header wide of the mark from close range.

The game opened up in the second half as the Hammers managed to carve out a couple chances, with Yarmeolenko going close on 55 minutes in the box, only to see goal-bound shot blocked by Zinchenko.

At the other end, another chance fell to the young Palmer after some good work by Raheem Sterling but the striker sent his first-time effort over the crossbar on 68 minutes.

With City struggling to breakdown the Hammers defence, Guardiola threw on Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus for Mahrez and Palmer in the final 15 minutes.

However, the substitutes did not have the desired effect as City were unable to penetrate West Ham, which forced the clash into a penalty shoot-out.

The Hammers went on to hold their nerve after scoring all five penalties while Areola saved Foden's spot-kick to advance to the quarter-finals.
