Carabao Cup Report: Manchester United v West Ham United 22 September 2021

Manchester United, who were without Cristiano Ronaldo, were dumped out of the Carabao Cup after 1-0 loss to West Ham United in the third round.

Result: Manchester United 0-1 West Ham United

Date: 22 September 2021

Venue: Old Trafford

The Hammers made the breakthrough nine minutes gone through Manuel Lanzini, who positioned perfectly to stab home Ryan Fredericks's cutback with fullback Alex Telles sold.

Manchester were almost back on level terms four minutes from going behind as Juan Mata whipped a return pass from a corner-kick against the crossbar from the tightest of angles.

Adjustments then were required of the Hammers a little before the middle of the first spell, with Fredericks withdrawn following an injury and Vladimir Coufal brought on.

Tasked with the front-line duties, Anthony Martial showed mesmerizing feet to work an opening ten minutes to halftime but the attempt whisked beyond Alphonse Areola's goal.

Manchester continued to seek a comeback following the start of the second half but Jadon Sancho wasn't able to steer in a ball into the six-yard area from Mata.

The Red Devils switched focus to the bench in the latter stages and added more firepower in Mason Greenwood who replaced the veteran Spaniard Mata.

Greenwood appeared to spark the host alive minutes from getting on, as Lingard looked for back-to-back goals against the Hammers but his strike from range was comfortably parried by Areola.

The frustrations continued to grow from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men towards full-time with Sancho seeing a chance saved and substitute Bruno Fernandes dragging a loose ball away.

West Ham should've made the result safe a minute from time through Andriy Yarmolenko but with the goal-gaping shot against the post however they still ran out winners.
