The Portugal captain netted three times in his side's 3-3 draw with 2010 world champions Spain. In doing so, he became only the fourth player to score at four different editions of the tournament, joining Germany duo Uwe Seeler and Miroslav Klose, as well as Brazil legend Pele.

In addition, he also became only the second player to score at nine successive major tournaments, equalling the record set by Ghana's Asamoah Gyan.

However, Ronaldo was not the only player who has found the back of the net multiple times so far. Russia's Denis Cheryshev, who scored a brace after coming off the bench in Russia's 5-0 over Saudi Arabia, was one of five players finishing the first round of fixtures with two goals. He has since scored his third in the host's 3-1 over Egypt on Monday.

Spain's Diego Costa scored two times in the 3-3 draw with Ronaldo's Portugal, while England striker Harry Kane and Belgium forward Romelu Lukaku also netted braces in their countries' opening wins.

Similar to Cheryshev, Artem Dzyuba has already featured in two games, and scored once in each of Russia's wins.

Overall, there have already been five own goals at the tournament, with three of them coming from African sides, while the likes of Messi, who missed a penalty, and Neymar are yet to score.
