With Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo having possibly played their final FIFA World Cups, the superstar duo are two of several big names who could retire from international football after their exits from the 2018 tournament in Russia.

Messi, who previously retired from national team duty in 2016 before making a U-turn on his decision, left Russia without commenting on his international future. Rumours suggest that the 31-year-old could call it quits after another disappointing tournament with the Albiceleste.
Similar to Messi, his longstanding rival Ronaldo might be asking himself what else there is for him to achieve in international football. He captained A Selecao to their first ever European Championship title in 2016, and will be 37 by the time the next World Cup comes around.
Along with the two superstars, a few of their respective teammates, such as 30-year-old Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain and ageing Portugal centre-back pairing Pepe and Jose Fonte, could hang up their boots.
Spain also have a few ageing stars, such as Sergio Ramos, David Silva and Nacho Monreal, who are all 32, and it remains to be seen whether or not they will be keen to go again after their shock defeat to Russia in the round of 16.
Egypt goalkeeper Essam El Hadary, who became the oldest ever player to feature at a World Cup at 45 years old, seems almost certain to call it quits, while Germany midfielder Sami Khedira also looks like his legs are too far gone gone to compete at the highest level.

Andres Iniesta, Javier Mascherano and Lucas Biglia have already announced their retirement from international football and it seems, likely that more stars will follow.
