Bafana Bafana Go Into Their 10th AFCON This Year

Bafana Bafana Go Into Their 10th AFCON This Year

It's not long now before Bafana Bafana go into action at the 2019 African Cup of Nations, and this year will be their 10th appearance at the tournament.

Stuart Baxter watched his side qualify for this year's edition of the African showpiece with a big 2-1 win away from home against Libya last month, with a Percy Tau brace dealing the hammer blow as the side put in a fine team performance in Tunisia.

Having won the AFCON back in their first appearance in 1996, South Africa's national team finished progressively lower in the tournaments that followed, and of late have even battled to qualify for the tournament as they fell down the pecking order in African football.

Now though, having been drawn against Ivory Coast, Morocco and Namibia in their group this year, Baxter and his side will be looking to try and end the hoodoo of not being able to pass the group stages outside of South Africa for nearly two decades - the last time was in 2002 - and progress as far into the tournament as possible.

In total, Bafana have played 38 AFCON games since making their debut in 1996, winning 14, drawing 12 and losing 12 while having an overal goal difference of +4 (45 scored, 41 conceded) under their various different head coaches over the years.
