Africa Cup Of Nations Was Close To Being Cancelled

AFCON

The 2015 Africa Cup of Nations would have been cancelled if Equatorial Guinea didn't step in at the last moment, according to the organising committee.

Representatives told Sky Sports News that they could not postpone the tournament, as asked by Morocco, due to clashes with the international football calendar.

Morocco asked for a postponement of the tournament just 50 days before it was scheduled to take place, due to fears that the Ebola virus may spread into their country.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) were forced to expel Morocco from the 2015 event, and it looked likely that the tournament was going to be cancelled, until Equatorial Guinea offered CAF a lifeline.

Equatorial Guinea is one of Africa's smallest nations and have major logistical problems - with only the two stadiums used for the co-hosting the 2012 AFCON being up to international standard.

The country will host the AFCON for a second time now, which also gives them a ticket to participate after originally being disqualified for fielding an ineligible player in the qualifying campaign.
