UEFA Champions League
Result: Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Real Madrid
Date: 01 November 2017
Venue: Wembley Stadium
A brace from Dele Alli helped Tottenham Hotspur to a memorable 3-1 win over Real Madrid at Wembley Stadium in a Wednesday night Champions League classic.
Real Madrid bossed possession in the opening few minutes, but after that, Tottenham took control.
Kieran Trippier was a persistent threat down the right, firing in a number of dangerous crosses. In the 27th minute, one of them found Dele Alli and his touch took the ball past Kiko Casilla and into the net.
The goal seemed to bring the visitors to life and they looked notably more threatening towards the end of the half. Hugo Lloris was forced to make some alert saves — including two to deny Cristiano Ronaldo shortly after Spurs took the lead.
Nevertheless, the hosts went into half-time with a deserved 1-0 lead.
In the 56th minute, Alli doubled that advantage as his shot took a deflection off Sergio Ramos and flew into the goal.
The visitors hit Tottenham with wave after wave of pressure, but they lacked quality in the final third. Spurs were lucky to escape in the 62nd minute as they frantically cleared the ball following a scramble on their goal-line.
Three minutes later, they all but sealed the win with a lightning fast counter. Alli found Harry Kane, who played Christian Eriksen through. The Dane slotted the ball past Casilla for Tottenham's third goal.
In the 80th minute, Ronaldo netted the visitors' first goal from a deflected shot following another scramble inside the Spurs box.
However, it was to be nothing more than consolation. Tottenham held on to beat the defending champions and Real Madrid's first visit to Wembley was a miserable one.
Spurs became the first Premier League club to qualify for the knokcout stages of the competition this season.
