UEFA Champions League Report: Paris Saint-Germain v Bayern Munich 13 April 2021

UEFA Champions League

Result: Paris Saint-Germain 0-1 Bayern Munich (3-3 agg.)

Date: 13 April 2021

Venue: Parc des Princes

UEFA Champions League holders Bayern Munich bowed in the quarter-finals on the away goals rule despite claiming a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the second-leg on Tuesday evening.

Jerome Boateng and Alphonso Davies were recalled to the Bayern line-up while Robert Lewandowski was still missing through injury. On the other hand, PSG had one alteration, with Leandro Paredes taking the place of the injured captain Marquinhos.

Mauricio Pochettino's charges were on the front foot early on, as Neymar came close to giving them the lead in the ninth minute after a deflected low cross from Kylian Mbappe but his strike was saved by shot-stopper Manuel Neuer.

Mbappe and Neymar combined again to good effect for PSG just before the half-hour mark, with the Brazilian going clear on goal in the centre of the box, but Neuer made himself big to make a crucial save.

Neymar was unlucky not to break the deadlock for the French side twice in a space of two minutes from the 37th minute, as first his curling strike from just outside the box came off the crossbar before struck the upright moments later.

The opening goal would go to the Germans, as Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting broke the deadlock for the Bavarians just before the break with a close-range header after goakeeper Keylor Navas parried David Alaba's shot.

The game continued to open up coming from the break and Thomas Muller came close to making it 2-0 for Bayern on the night in the 62nd minute after going through at the near post but his shot was saved by Navas.

Hans-Dieter Flick made an attacking change in the last 20 minutes by bringing on Jamal Musiala in place of winger Davies while Pochettino responded by introducing Moise Kean for Julian Draxler.

Mbappe thought he had levelled matters for PSG 12 minutes before time after going clear on goal and fired a strike past Neuer but his goal was disallowed for offside.

The Bavarians threw everything at PSG, with Sane coming close eight minutes before time with a strike across the face of goal but Flick raised eyebrows in the last five minutes by withdrawing striker Choupo-Moting for Javi Martinez.

In the Pochettino's men settled for a 1-0 defeat that was enough to book them a spot in the semi-finals on away goals' rule and they will come up against the winner between Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund.
