Pep Guardiola made one change from the big win over Southampton, as Riyad Mahrez made way for Bernardo Silva on the right side of the attack.

Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel made three changes as City loanee Joao Cancelo, Sadio Mane and Thomas Muller dropped to the bench, with Kinglsey Coman, Leon Goretzka and Dayot Upamecano getting starts.

City started the strongest of the two sides, with Ilkay Gündogan nodding over from Kevin de Bruyne's cross on eight minutes before Bayern goalkeeper Yann Sommer nearly deflected a back-pass into his own minutes later.

The hosts carved out another good chance after the 20-minute mark when Jack Grealish teed up Erling Haaland on the edge of the box, but City's top scorer fired a tame effort at Sommer.

However, City did get the breakthrough seven minutes later through a superb strike from Rodri, who skipped past one challenge before curling one into the top corner from 20 yards.

Bayern, meanwhile, were unable to carve out any serious openings in the first period and looked out of ideas around the 18 area without Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting on the pitch.

The visitors came out firing in the second half and carved out two big chances for former City star Leroy Sane in the opening ten minutes, but Ederson came out on top on both occasions.

There was a surprising change from Man City in the 68th minute when star midfielder De Bruyne was replaced by Julian Alvarez, while Bayern threw on Sadio Mane for Jamal Musiala.

However, City would double their lead a minute later when Grealish pounced on an error from Upamecano and played in Haaland, who turned provider to pick out Silva for the close-range header.

The third goal arrived with 15 minutes left on the clock when John Stones headed a cross into the path of Haaland, who volleyed home from close range for his 45th goal of the season.

The home side did manage to carve out a couple more chances late in the half, but they were let down by their finish and will take a three-goal lead to Munich.
