UEFA Champions League Report: Juventus v Ajax Amsterdam 16 April 2019

UEFA Champions League

Result: Juventus 1-2 Ajax Amsterdam (2-3 on aggregate)

Date: 16 April 2019

Venue: Allianz Stadium

Ajax Amsterdam claimed another major scalp in the UEFA Champions League after defeating Cristiano Ronaldo's Juventus 2-1 to advance to the semi-finals.

Andre Onana almost gifted the hosts an opener in the fifth minute when the Ajax goalkeeper took his time clearing from a back-pass as Ronaldo charged him down and the attempted clearance came back off the forward and behind for a goal-kick.   Ajax had their first decent opportunity of the game in the 21st minute. David Neres worked his way in to the box neatly and played a one-two with the ball deflecting in to the path of Donny van de Beek just a couple of yards out but he could only divert the ball over the bar.   The Bianconeri took the lead in the 28th minute as Ronaldo met a Miralem Pjanic corner with his head and powered the ball into the bottom corner past a static Onana.   Five minutes later, Ajax were level. A left-wing cross came out to Hakim Ziyech and he took a speculative shot at goal which deflected through the crowd and straight into the path of Van de Beek, who was one-on-one with Szczesny and slotted calmly into the far corner.   The visitors seemed to find their rhythm after the break with Juve very much on the back foot. Seven minutes after the interval, Van de Beek worked it wide to Ziyech on the right, however, the angle closed on him and his eventual attempt at the near post was saved well by Wojcech Szczesny/   Soon after, a corner found Ronaldo at the back post, but he uncharacteristically skewed the header wide. On the hour mark, Neres switched possession towards Dusan Tadic on the right and he squared the ball back across goal for Ziyech, but Pjanic managed to slide in and clear away.   Ajax deservedly took the lead in the 67th minute when Matthijs de Ligt headed home from Lasse Schone's wonderfully delivered corner.   The visitors thought they had put the game beyond doubt when Ziyech played the one-two with Van de Beek and curled the ball beautifully in to the top right-hand corner, but it was ruled out for a marginal offside after going to VAR.   But that disallowed goal mattered little in the end as the men from Amsterdam claimed another big scalp in the form of the Old Lady after knocking out holders Real Madrid in the last 16.
