Olympique Lyon took to Twitter to deny rumours that Mathieu Valbuena had passed away over the weekend.

The 32-year-old was left out of Lyon's squad for their 2-1 win over Toulouse on Saturday, and rumours of his passing went viral via Twitter.

However, Lyon responded by tweeting the following statement:

"Mathieu Valbuena is fortunately alive contrary to what vile individuals peddle on Twitter.

"Olympique Lyonnais is horrified at such a shameful and inhuman act."

Valbuena was infamously in the headlines earlier this year for the sex tape scandal that eventually saw Karim Benzema miss the UEFA European Championship.

The 1.67m midfielder has made nine appearances for Lyon this season, but has played only one full match.
