Date: 22 April 2015
Venue: Santiago Bernabeu
Real Madrid secured their spot in the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League after beating Atletico Madrid 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday evening.
The defending champions were without the services of Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Luka Modric, who all missed out through injury.
The first meaningful effort of the half arrived in the 14th minute, when Hernandez teed up Cristiano Ronaldo on the edge of the area but the Portuguese dragged his effort just wide of the mark.
Diego Godin came to Ateltico's rescue in the 31st minute, as the Uruguayan did well to clear Hernandez's goal-bound header over the crossbar.
Madrid almost went ahead just before the halftime break, as James took advantage of Saul's error and slipped in Ronaldo, but the Portuguese failed to beat Jan Oblak.
The hosts nearly broke the deadlock shortly after the halftime break, as Isco delightfully played in Hernandez, who dragged his effort just wide of the upright.
It was all Madrid as far as chances were concerned and they went close in the 60th minute when Sergio Ramos' header was saved by Oblak.
Atletico were then reduced to 10 men in the 75th minute, after Arda Turan was shown his second yellow card of the game for a challenge on Ramos.
The home side eventually broke the deadlock in the 87th minute when Ronaldo teed up Hernandez and the Mexican converted from six-yards out to send Los Blancos into the final four.
