Top Managers Who Have Never Won The UEFA Champions League

Top Managers Who Have Never Won The UEFA Champions League

Following Arsenal's 5-1 thrashing by Bayern Munich, Arsene Wenger might enter the history books as the best manager to have never won the UEFA Champions League – here are some others who failed to lift the trophy, at least so far.

If Wenger does not add the illustrious title to his trophy cabinet, he will definitely go down as the manager with the most seasons in the UCL without lifting the cup.

The Frenchman is currently experiencing his 21st season in Europe's premier club competition, only one behind legendary Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, but it looks like it will be another trophyless campaign for him in Europe.

Wenger's Arsenal did reach the 2006 final, but lost 2-1 to FC Barcelona, who did not even need a certain Lionel Messi – 18 years old at the time.

The late Valeri Lobanovsky is the "second most capped" Champions League coach having experienced 12 campaigns, mainly with Dynamo Kiev, without ever lifting the trophy. The legendary Russian reached the 1999 semi-final, where they lost to eventual winners Bayern Munich.

Former Inter Milan and Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini was in charge for eight Champions League seasons at his respective clubs, but his best finish in the competition were the quarter-finals in 2004/05 and 2005/06.

Despite his relatively young age, at 49, Massimiliano Allegri is already experiencing his seventh European campaign. His best finish came in 2014/15, when his Juventus side lost to FC Barcelona in the final.

Legendary Real Madrid boss Leo Beenhakker won six titles with Los Blancos but never lifted the European Champions Cup, the predecessor of the current format of the Champions League.

Manuel Pellegrini is another coach to have been in charge during seven UCL seasons without ever winning it. He did, however, make the history books for becoming the only manager to guide two different teams to the quarter-finals of the competition in their debut season with a club.

Claudio Ranieri is currently experiencing his sixth UCL campaign, while managers such as Laurent Blanc and Felix Magath also make the list (both five UCL seasons, zero titles).

Jurgen Klopp is another relatively young coach with vast Champions League experience, having been in charge for four European campaigns so far and making the final in 2012/13, where his young Borussia Dortmund side lost to Bayern.

Similar to Klopp, it feels like Diego Simeone has been around for ages, but the Argentine is only in charge of his fourth Champions League season. He could go down as the unluckiest manager in UCL history, though, having already lost two of the past three finals.
