Real Star Claps Back At Xavi's UCL 'Luck' Jab

Real Star Claps Back At Xavi's UCL 'Luck' Jab

Dani Carvajal

Real Madrid stalwart Dani Carvajal has clapped back at Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez after the Spanish tactician stated that the best team does not always win the UEFA Champions League.

'I'm Offended' – Xavi Fumes At Refereeing After Inter Loss

Barca and Real have been rivals since the early 20th century, and it is unlikely those tensions will cool in the near future. With a mere two weeks until the latest instalment of ElClasico is on show, it seems that animosity is already starting to brew once again.

Prior to the Blaugrana's defeat to Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, their head coach Xavi stated that a lot of luck is involved in winning the competition, and that the best team does not necessarily win it every time.

With those words having been interpreted by some as a jab at Real, Los Blancos defender Carvajal has now seemingly responded.

"When you have won five of the last nine Champions Leagues, luck is on the sidelines," the Spain international said ahead of Real's UCL clash against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday night, as per Sport.

"It amuses me that the debate about justice and not justice only appears when Real Madrid wins the Champions League and not when other teams win it.

"Opinions are subjective and everyone has their own. It is complex to talk about what is fair and what is not, but in recent years we have been the best.

"Madrid is always among the four/five favourite teams for the title.

"I don't think that, when someone faces us, he doesn't see us as a possible champion in the future."

Carvajal has won five UCL trophies with Los Merengues, the most recent of which came last season when they defeated Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool en route to their 14th European Cup.
