Los Blancos have been courting the France captain since his AS Monaco days, and came closest to luring the attacker to the Spanish capital two off-seasons ago when his then-contract with Paris Saint-Germain was set to expire, only for him to sign a three-year extension instead.
The Bondy native's deal at the Parc des Princes is now soon set to conclude once again, at the end of this campaign, and having publicly stated that he has no desire to renew his contract in the French capital, this once again opened up the possibility of Los Merengues finally signing the pacey attacker.
However, the record European champions are also believed to be interested in Scandinavian sensation Haaland.
The 23-year-old scored 52 goals across all competitions for Manchester City last season as he helped the club finally get their hands on the UEFA Champions League trophy, while also capturing the Premier League and FA Cup titles.
The Leeds-born striker is rumoured to have a €200 million (R4 billion) release clause in his current deal, something Real are believed to be interested in triggering, but according to Jose Manuel Otero Lastres, the Spanish giants are more inclined to continue pursuing the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner instead.
"Probably, for Real Madrid's game, Mbappe is better suited than Haaland," the Los Blancos executive told the Remontada Blanca Twitch channel.
"Madrid has to open the defences with skilled players. It is more about penetrating the defences with combination plays than with crosses into the area and headers.

"Madrid's game is more modern, with counter-attacks, speed, combinations. We are more of this type of players."
