Los Blancos were without the services of Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard, as Karim Benzema was flanked in the attack by Isco and Luka Modric. Meanwhile, Vitolo replaced the injured Joao Felizx for the visitors.

The early openings fell to the home side as Sergio Ramos saw his close range effort sail just over the crossbar before the Los Blancos defender went close again moments all inside the opening 15 minutes.

Atletico were eager to end their seven-game winless run in the Madrid derby, and they went agonisingly close on 24 minutes when Angel Correa rattled the upright with Thibaut Courtois well beaten.

Atletico had the momentum in the latter stages of the first half and they were nearly rewarded in the final five minutes after Llorente played in Correa, who fired just wide of the upright.

Zinedine Zidane responded with a double change immediately after the halftime break as Isco and Toni Kroos made way for Vinicius Junior and Lucas Vazquez.

The deadlock was eventually broken 10 minutes into the second as top scorer Benzema got ahead of his marker to turn home Ferland Mendy's cross from left flank.

Diego Simeone responded with a couple changes of his own in an attempt to secure an equaliser, as Yannick Carrasco and Sergio Camello replaced Vitolo and Thomas Partey.

However, it was the home side who looked more likely to get another goal as Modric went close with an effort from distance while Vinicius had a powerful effort saved by Jan Oblak on 80 minutes.

In the end, Zidane's charges were able to see out the closing stages of the second half to claim three points and cement top spot in the Spanish top flight.
