France Football, who are in charge of giving out the Ballon d'Or prize, recently claimed that Los Blancos attacker Ronaldo is the favourite for the 2017 trophy.
According to Don Balon, Messi has been rattled by the French publication's claim as it could see Ronaldo draw level with the Argentine on five Ballons d'Or.
Real are currently the leaders in La Liga, and will also play against Juventus in the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League final next month.
Messi has scored more goals than Ronaldo this season, but the Portuguese's chances of winning two major trophies within the space of a couple of weeks reportedly makes him the favourite for the prestigious award.
Ronaldo won his fourth Ballon d'Or last year, while Messi picked up his fifth two years ago.
