Portugal Coach Reveals Ronaldo Decision Ahead Of FIFA Break

Roberto Martinez and Cristiano Ronaldo

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has made a decision on Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the next international break in June.

The 38-year-old's future with national side was doubtful after a disappointing campaign at the 2022 FIFA World Cup as well as moving to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.

While many though leaving European football for Saudi Arabia would hurt his chances of staying with the national side, Martinez confirmed Ronaldo will be back with the squad in June.

"Yes, that [Ronaldo will be called up again] is my position," the manager told Portuguese broadcaster Antena 1 on Thursday.

"There is no other player in world football with 198 international caps, and that is something very valuable for us.

"I think Cristiano played a very positive and important role in the games we played in March and it's important to continue with that attitude on a day-to-day basis.

"[He is] a very important player and a very important person in the dressing room.

"He plays in a key position, he is a striker who can make a difference."

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward scored four goals in the last two appearances for national side in the 2024 European Championship qualifiers.
