Prior to the commencement of the 2022/23 season, the French superstar was out of contract at Paris Saint-Germain.

The pacey attacker was heavily linked with Real, but ultimately, he decided to sign a massive extension with the record Ligue 1 champions, who were understood to have promised him that they would go big in that off-season transfer window by signing the likes of Bernardo Silva and Robert Lewandowski.

Those signings did not come to fruition, though, and the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner felt betrayed as a consequence and reportedly wanted to leave the Parc des Princes as a result.

The Paris native even went as far as missing the opening league match of that season, such was his determination to make a dramatic exit. Adductor pain was cited as the reason for his absence, but it is understood that he was eager on making an exit from the club.

According to L'Equipe, with Mbappe restless, two European giants were keen on signing him.

One was Los Blancos, while the other was Liverpool.

The Reds are claimed to have offered PSG €200 million (R3.9 million) as they had already managed to successfully negotiate a short-term contract with the forward.

The reason given for the duration of the mooted contract at Anfield not being long-term is because he still harboured ambitions of signing for Los Blancos, but it is further claimed that when then PSG sporting director Antero Henrique asked Liverpool to up their price to €400 million (R7.8 million), a potential deal collapsed.
