Messi has been the highest paid player at the Catalan club for years now, and according to The Sun, he earns £560 000 (R9.6 million) in weekly wages.
However, because Spain's tax rates stand at 52%, it is believed that Messi only takes home £270 000 (R4.6 million) every week.
Despite his whopping salary, it has been speculated that the 29-year-old wants an improved contract of £800 000 a week. However, this has not been confirmed.
The Argentine's reluctance to sign a new deal has put other top European clubs on alert, with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Manchester City said to be after his signature.
