The Argentine netted a brace in Barca's 5-0 win over Deportivo Alaves, taking his tally to 25 goals in the league, more than any other player this season.
Despite playing four games less than second-placed Karim Benzema, Messi ended up with four more goals than the Real Madrid striker.
He has now won the LaLiga Golden Boot, which is named after legendary Athletic Bilbao striker Rafael "Pichichi" Moreno, for a fourth successive season and a seventh time overall.
As a consequence, Messi broke Telmo Zarra's record, with the Spaniard having won the Pichichi award six times between 1944 and 1953.
Alfredo Di Stefano, Quini and Hugo Sanchez won the accolade five times each, while Cristiano Ronaldo lifted it thrice during his nine years in Spain.
Messi's tally of 25 goals, though, was the lowest he needed to claim the accolade, and is exactly half his personal best of 50 strikes in the 2011/12 campaign.
