Lionel Messi Close To Becoming The Record Scorer Among Europe's Biggest Leagues

Lionel Messi is the leading goalscorer in LaLiga history, and recently moved past Gerd Muller's record of 365 goals in the Bundesliga, which means there is only one record scorer from Europe's 10 highest ranked leagues with more goals than the Argentine.

The FC Barcelona superstar netted his 366th LaLiga goal in his side's 4-2 comeback win over Real Sociedad on Sunday – his side's first win at the Anoeta Stadium in 11 years.

In so doing, Messi has now scored one more goal than Muller, who became the Bundesliga's record scorer after netting 365 times for Bayern Munich between 1965 and 1979.

But one record scorer among Europe's highest ranked leagues still has more goals than the 30-year-old. Albert De Cleyn scored an impressive 377 goals for Belgium side Malinois – now Mechelen – between 1932 and 1955. He could have scored even more had three Belgian seasons not been suspended due to the Second World War, according to UEFA's official website.

Messi is followed by Jimmy Greaves, who is the record scorer in England after netting 357 times for Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and West Ham.

When it comes to the most goals across Europe's top five leagues, Cristiano Ronaldo is still seven strikes ahead of his longstanding rival after scoring 84 for Manchester United and another 289 since joining Real Madrid.
