Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo scored his ninth goal of this season's UEFA Champions League group stages on Wednesday night, and equalled a record set by longstanding rival Lionel Messi along the way.

The Portuguese became the first player to net in each of the six group stage matches in the competition after scoring once in Real's 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund.
The strike was Ronaldo's ninth UCL goal in the 2017/18 UCL campaign and his 60th overall in the group stages, equalling Messis all-time record, as UEFA pointed out. Overall, Ronaldo has now scored 114 goals in the Champions League, extending his own competition record.
Messi follows with 97 UCL goals in second place. The Argentine, who started FC Barcelona's past two Champions League games on the bench, has scored only three goals in the competition so far.
Finishing the group stage on nine strikes, Ronaldo ended the first round of fixtures just two goals shy of his record for the most group stage goals in a single campaign, set in 2015/16.

Real, though, only finished in second spot behind Tottenham Hotspur in Group H, while FC Barcelona topped their group ahead of Juventus. Both will find out their Last 16 fate during the draw on Monday.
