The 30-year-old could reportedly be selected as one of Portugal's three over-age players for the U-23 competition.
Fernando Gomes, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, confirmed that Ronaldo is in contention for the squad after Portugal's U-21 side qualified for the Rio Olympics by making the last four at the current U-21 European Championship.
"It is a possibility. We can take three players over the age of 23. Cristiano is one of the hypotheses, but we have still not sat down to discuss it," he told Globoesporte.
Portugal's U-21 team, with stars like Bernardo Silva and William Carvalho, thrashed Germany 5-0 to book their place in the U-21 Euro final.
At the Olympics next year, Ronaldo could face Neymar and Messi. The Brazil captain has long been confirmed as a choice for the host nation's Olympic squad, while Messi's name is also in Argentina's mix.
Argentina's U-20 side qualified for the Olympics by winning the U-20 South American games, after which their coach said he "dedicates" the title to Javier Mascherano and Lionel Messi.
However, Ronaldo's participation at the Olympics could depend on Portugal's success at the 2016 European Championship in France. The Euro runs between 10 June and 10 July, while the Olympics starts on 5 August.
