Messi and Ronaldo have been taring defences a part for longer than a decade, but it is in La Liga where they both grew to superstar status.
Since the Portuguese international joined Spain's top flight in the 2009/10 season, the two attackers have dominated when it comes to goals, with Messi winning his first Pichichi in that season, after scoring 34 goals in 35 matches for Barca, according to Transfermarkt.
The 2010/11 season saw Ronaldo win his first top scorer award in Spain, after a campaign in which he hit the back of the net 40 times from just 34 games.
The 2011/12 and 2012/13 Pichichi awards were both won by the Blaugrana's Messi, as the Argentine hit the back of the net 50 times and 46 times respectively.
Ronaldo then won the award for two seasons running, scoring 31 times in 30 games in the 2013/14 campaign, and 48 times in 35 matches in 2014/15.
The 2015/16 season saw a break in cycle, as Barca's Luis Suarez fired 40 goals from 35 matches for the Catalan giants, pipping both his teammate and Ronaldo to the accolade.
