Why Jadon Sancho's Manchester United Deal Really Fell Through

The real reason why Manchester United's pursuit of Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho failed has reportedly been revealed.

According to The Athletic, there was a "difference of opinion" on the signing between executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and United owner Joel Glazer.

The England international was said to be manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's top target for the transfer window, but the deadline passed without United sealing a deal for the player.

It was a busy deadline day for the club, though, with Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles and Facundo Pellistri arriving at Old Trafford, while a deal for Atalanta starlet Amad Diallo was also confirmed, although he will only join in January.

It is claimed Woodward had pushed the owners into making a higher bid for Sancho after their initial offer of £80 million (R1.7 billion), plus add-ons, was rejected by the Bundesliga side earlier in the window.

Dortmund were clear that they would only accept a bid of £108 million (R2.3 billion), an amount Glazer and other board members seemingly felt was unrealistic due to the current financial conditions.

Woodward was ultimately told that the deal would be "too much money", according to The Athletic, leaving him with no option with regards to pursuing a late deal on the final day of the transfer window.
