Reina, 40, is now a starter for the Yellow Submarine after the club sold Argentine goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli to Ajax Amsterdam in the January transfer window.
His stint in the Valencian city marks the latest chapter in what has been a remarkable career in which the shot-stopper has been able to hold aloft the 2010 FIFA World Cup, two European championship trophies and a UEFA Super Cup.
The La Masia alumni first announced himself to the world at the Estadio de la Ceramica in 2002, and since then has played for the likes of Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Napoli and AC Milan, but now finds himself back in the Spanish top flight playing under Quique Setien.
Having also played for Barcelona, the Madrid native has revealed why he chose Villarreal to be the LaLiga side he returned home to.
"I think this [returning to Villarreal] is a dream come true," the Spaniard revealed in a press conference Soccer Laduma attended.
"The fact that I can go back to the club where I became a football player and enjoyed continuity, and where I was trusted by my colleagues and supporters.
"It was a small club in those days and while I had more ambitious goals in mind, over the years both of us have grown, and for me it is a wonderful retirement because you feel that you do belong at the club.
