High-flying Girona reclaimed top spot in LaLiga after defeating city rivals FC Barcelona 4-2 on Sunday night.

Result: FC Barcelona 2-4 Girona

Date: 10 December 2023

Venue: Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys

Blaugrana named the same line-up to the side that beat Athletico Madrid the last time out, as Rafinha and Joao Felix flanked Robert Lewandowski upfront while they were still without goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The game got off to a flying start as Girona went ahead on 12 minutes from a counter-attack after Artem Dovbyk converted a square pass from Viktor Tsygankov.

Barca were fired up and Lewandowski levelled matters seven minutes later with a powerful header from a cross by Raphinha following a corner situation.

The game opened up after the half-hour mark and Girona restored their lead just before the interval after Miguel Gutierrez made a great surge in the box and fired a shot past shot-stopper Inaki Pena.

Barca had a bright start in the second stanza as they showed their attacking intentions after Frenkie de Jong forced a save out of shot-stopper Paulo Gazzaniga.

After being more on the front foot 20 minutes into the second stanza, Xavi changed personnel in attack as Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres entered the park in place of Felix and Raphinha.

However, Girona went 3-1 up ten minutes before time after a great finish by Valery from a long pass by Cristhian Stuani.

Ilkay Gundogan pulled a goal back for Barca in stoppage time after a square pass by Torres.

However, Girona killed the game moments later in stoppage time after Stuani got to the end of a cross to sensationally make it 4-2 to seal their first-ever win over Barcelona.
