On Sunday evening, Kessie played only five minutes as he made his second league appearance for the Blaugrana when they defeated Real Sociedad 4-1 at the Estadio Anoeta.

The 25-year-old is one of a few stars who joined Barca in this transfer window, having left Italian champions AC Milan on a free transfer in May. The reputation the central midfielder earned himself in Serie A earned him a big contract upon his arrival in Catalonia.

Kessie is now paid €260 385 (R4.4 million) before deductions every week at the Camp Nou, making him the highest-paid African footballer in the Spanish top flight and one of the highest-paid players at the Catalan club.

The box-to-box midfielder has eclipsed west African teammate Aubameyang as the highest-paid African star in LaLiga. The former Gabon national team captain also recently joined Xavi's squad, having signed in January.

His prolific exploits in the Premier League earned him a contract worth €220 385 (R3.7 million) a week, and the 33-year-old has hit the ground running since joining, finding the back of the net 13 times in 24 appearances.

There is another European-born hitman among the highest-earning African stars in Spain, with Inaki Williams having recently switched his international allegiance to Ghana as he looks to help the Black Stars' prospects at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

At his boyhood club Athletic Bilbao, the forward is the team's second-highest-paid player, making €114 808 (R1.9 million) per week before deductions.
