Qatari Club Chief Breaks Silence On Tau Interest

Qatari Club Chief Breaks Silence On Tau Interest

A club in the Gulf region has set the record straight regarding rumours about negotiations over prising Percy Tau away from Al Ahly.

For much of the 2024/25 campaign, it has been suggested that the winger is no longer part of Marcel Koller's plans.

The Bafana Bafana star is now in the final six months of his existing contract with the Red Devils, and reports of a possible extension are yet to surface, suggesting that the likeliest outcome for the Witbank native will be a departure from the Cairo International Stadium by season's end.

A destination that Tau has been heavily linked with is the Qatar Stars League. It is said that multiple teams in Qatar's top flight have taken an interest in the former Mamelodi Sundowns attacker, with one of the clubs keen on him believed to be Al-Khor.

The Knights currently sit rock bottom of the log standings, and it has been suggested that successfully acquiring the South African could help their fortunes, but it seems they may have different plans.

Speaking to FilGoal, Al-Khor head of football, Hamad Dasmal Al Kuwari, ended the speculation involving the 2023 CAF Interclubs Player of the Year by saying: "We have not entered into negotiations, neither directly nor indirectly, to sign Al Ahly duo Hussein El Shahat and Percy Tau."

He added: "There is no intention at the present time to sign any professional player at all."

While Al-Khor are not interested in signing Tau, a Qatari club that has reportedly been in negotiations with the South African is Qatar SC. It is reported that the record African champions have already accepted a bid from the club, and the 46-capped international could be making his way to Doha in the near future.

It remains to be seen whether the ex-Brighton and Hove Albion man will ultimately complete the move, but it does seem as though his exploits for the 12-time CAF Champions League winners have enhanced his reputation among teams in the Gulf region.
