Philippe Coutinho became the most expensive January transfer in history after completing his €160 million (R2.38 billion) move from Liverpool to FC Barcelona earlier this month.
The Reds were also involved in the second costliest deal this month after luring Virgil Van Dijk for €78.8 million (R1.17 billion) from Southampton to Anfield. Meanwhile, Diego Costa's €66 million (R980 million)-move from Chelsea to Atletico Madrid completes the top three.
Cedric Bakambu has already started training with his new club Beijin Guoan after the Chinese side reportedly activated his €40 million (R594 million) buyout clause. However, the deal has not been officially announced in China because Beijin are trying to find a loophole in order to prevent a tax payment in the region of €35 million (R520 million). Yet, Transfermarkt have already listed his deal as confirmed after Bakambu left Villarreal. The combined fee would make the former Villarreal striker the most expensive African in history.
Everton were in charge of the fifth- and sixth-most expensive signings after completing a €22.5 million (R334 million) deal for Theo Walcott and a €22 million (R327 million) move for Cenk Tosun.
