Los Blancos beat hosts Kashima Antlers, who knocked out Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarter-final and became the first Asian nation to reach the final, 4-2 after extra-time.

It was Real's 21st international trophy in history, more than any other club.

Al Alhy have lifted eight CAF Champions Leagues trophies, six CAF Super Cups, four African Cup Winners' Cups, one CAF Confederations Cup and one Afro-Asian Cup (another predecessor to the FIFA Club World Cup).

Barcelona, meanwhile, have won five UEFA Champions League trophies, five UEFA Super Cups, four European Cup Winners' Cups, three Fairs Cups (predecessor of the UEFA Cup/Europa League) and three FIFA Club World Cups.
