African Clubs Haven't Fared Well At The Club World Cup

Mamelodi Sundowns crashed out of the FIFA Club World Cup last week in sixth place out of seven teams, with Africa once again failing to place in the top four. Since the competition began in 2000 there have been 13 editions of the tournament, with UEFA (9) and CONMEBOL (4) the only two confederations to have been successful up until this point. Africa, who has hosted the CWC twice, have finished second on two occasions over the years (TP Mazembe – 2010, Raja Casablanca – 2013), but CAF have less finishes in the top four than any other confederation other than Oceania's OFC. In fact, since 2007 the actual champions of Africa (Raja were there as hosts) have finished sixth six times, the lowest place a CAF side can finish at the tournament.
