The former Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus fullback was detained at the beginning of the year after being accused of raping a woman in the bathroom of a nightclub in Barcelona.
The Brazilian has been held in custody ever since, without bail, and despite his repeated calls to be freed, the authorities have denied them as he is considered a flight risk.
The Barcelona high court have subsequently confirmed his prosecution, concluding that statements from the alleged victim and witnesses, coupled with expert corroboration, provided the necessary evidence to try him for the crime of sexual assault.
According to ESPN, while a court date has not yet been finalised, the 40-year-old will go on trial regarding the incident, with the prosecution is also said to be demanding a nine-year sentence for Alves and that the victim in question be compensated $150 000 (R2.8 million) for the ordeal.
When the allegations first surfaced, the Brazilian denied knowing who the woman was, but would later insist that his relations with the accuser was consensual. In August, an investigative judge decided to indict him and now Alves could be imprisoned for close to a decade.
