Result: Chelsea 1 (5)-(3) 1 Norwich City

Date: 17 January 2018

Venue: Stamford Bridge

Nine-man Chelsea advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup after defeating Norwich City 5-3 on penalties at Stamford Bridge.

The match was delayed for a few minutes following public transport problems.

Chelsea got the first shot on goal through Danny Drinkwater but it went wide of goal, while Michy Batshuayi followed up with another attempt that ricochet out for a corner.

The hosts edged closer to the breakthrough after Drinkwater was denied by the frame of the woodwork after 25 minutes from outside the box.

The visitors responded in unique fashion after the half and hour mark through Nelson Oliveira, who also struck the frame of the woodwork.

Antonio Conte's men finally made their presence felt when Batshuayi made contact with Kennedy's cross 10 minutes into the second half to blast the ball into the roof of the net.

As expected, the Canaries looked for an immediate reply and were denied once again by the post with Josh Murphy going close with a half volley.

Pedro was booked by referee Graham Scott for simulation as he tried to sway the officials to handing them a penalty after 60 minutes.

Norwich threatened again four minutes later, by forcing Willy Caballero into a point-blank save from James Maddison's attempt.

They were finally rewarded in added time through Jamal Lewis' looping header following Timm Klose's delivery to sent the game into extra-time.

Graham handed out another caution for simulation to the home side after Willian fancied his chance to draw a penalty kick which the VAR reviewed and stuck with the initial decision.

The Brazilian's frustration in front of goal continued after Angus Gunn denied him from close range, while Alvaro Morata's looping header minutes later was also rejected by the Englishman.

Matters got worse for the Blues when Pedro was handed his marching orders by Graham for a second bookable offence in the second period of extra time.

Pedro was followed by Morata after expressing his incense towards Graham for booking him for simulation inside the penalty box minutes later.

The tie would be decided on penalties and after converting their first two kicks, the Blues came up trumps 5-3 to book a fourth round date with Newcastle United.
