FA Cup
Result: Chelsea 3-0 Newcastle United
Date: 28 January 2018
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Chelsea cruised into the next round of the FA Cup with a 3-0 win over Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.
Javier Manquillo nearly opened the scoring in the 11th minute after being picked out brilliantly by Jonjo Shelvey on the left side of the box, but his curling could not find the target.
Michy Batshuayi broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark after Marcos Alonso made a galloping run on the left wing to setup the Belgian international, who had space to squeeze his shot in the top centre of the goals, 1-0.
Batshuayi got his brace two minutes before the break with a deflected effort from close range, following a fine run from Eden Hazard.
Shelvey could have reduced the deficit in first-half stoppage time with a long range screamer but Willy Caballero was equal to the task.
The Magpies came out firing in the first 10 minutes of the second half, with Shelvey coming close again with a header that sailed over the bar.
Alonso did end the match as a contest in the 72nd minute with a precise left-footed strike from a free-kick just outside the box that found the top corner, 3-0.
Pedro had a chance to also get on the score-sheet with five minutes left, but Karl Darlow produced a fine save to deny the Spaniard as the score remained 3-0 at the full-time whistle.
