Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has come under heavy scrutiny after an English publication published pictures of him alleged to be drunk.
Man Utd Player: I Don't Know Why Mou Doesn't Pick Me
The 31-year-old was ruled out of England's match against Spain on Tuesday night due to a knee injury, but recent images of the Three Lions skipper have left fans wondering, if he was perhaps left out for different reasons.
On Wednesday, The Sun published pictures of the Red Devils player out and about, which reportedly showed him intoxicated. The report claimed that Rooney gatecrashed a wedding and was "too drunk to stand".
Rooney released a statement via a spokesperson, apologising for the "inappropriate" pictures.
"Naturally Wayne is sorry that pictures taken with fans have been published today," the spokesperson said on the player's behalf.
"Although it was a day off for the whole squad and staff, he fully recognises that the images are inappropriate for someone in his position.
"Earlier today Wayne spoke privately to both Gareth Southgate and Dan Ashworth to unreservedly apologise.
"He would like to further extend that apology to any young fans who have seen these pictures."
