'Alexander-Arnold's Defending Is Championship Level'

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold's defensive qualities have been described as "Championship level" by a member of France's 1998 FIFA World Cup-winning squad.

New Chelsea Coach Identifies First Transfer Target?

Since breaking into the Reds' starting XI in 2017, Alexander-Arnold has quickly become one of the best right-backs in world football.

His unique attacking prowess as endeared him to many football admirers the world over, with his crossing delivery having been a constant source for a lot of the Merseysiders' goals in recent years, but his defending ability has often been brought into question too.

Liverpool have leaked quite a few goals in the early stages of the 2022/23 campaign and Alexander-Arnold's performances have been under the microscope as a result.

The latest to criticise his work in defence is Frank Leboeuf, with the former Chelsea and France defender admitting to appreciating Alexander-Arnold's attacking game but also comparing his defending to that of an English Second Division player.

"Look at Trent Alexander-Arnold. I love the guy, his offensive qualities. But defensively, he's Championship level," he said while speaking to Journal du Dimanche.

"Only Klopp's system works for him. When it doesn't work as well as it has this season, all you see is his defensive shortcomings.

"I want to take him with me to work on the basics. I would say to him: 'Turn your head and look behind you, it will be better already'.

"It was Roberto Carlos who deformed generations of defenders."

Price Tag Revealed For Dortmund Star Bellingham?

The latest generation of England stars has been blessed with many good right-backs, with the likes of Reece James, Kyle Walker, and Kieran Trippier all in contention for a place in Gareth Southgate's Three Lions squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, so Alexander-Arnold will be hoping he and Liverpool concede less goals in the matches to come as he looks to secure his ticket to Qatar later this year.
