It has been reported that the Spaniard is the man the Citizens want to replace Manuel Pellegrini as manager, but the Bayern Munich boss apparently sees his future on the other side of Manchester.
Guardiola's contract with the Bavarians expires at the end of this campaign, and he is reportedly intent on taking over at United.
Van Gaal's deal with the Red Devils finishes at the end of next season, and the Manchester Evening News has now claimed that Guardiola could take a year's break from the game, and then take the United job once the Dutchman leaves.
The Spaniard took a 12-month sabbatical after his exit from Barcelona in 2013, reportedly feeling drained from the demands of being the Catalans' boss for four years.
