The German midfielder has turned down a new contract at the Dortmund, and with his current deal expiring in 2016, the club may want to sell the player while they still can.
It's reported that Gundogan has already been in contact with Louis van Gaal's Man United, and has given them the go-ahead to make an official bid for his services.
However, Gundogan has spoken out and said that he won't feel forced to leave the club, which could be seen as the player leaving a door open for Barcelona - who, due to their transfer ban, can only buy players in January 2016.
"If I don't renew my contract that doesn't mean I won't stay until 2016," he said, as reported by the Daily Star.
"I'm not hell-bent on leaving by force and would be prepared to stay for another year if that suited both sides."
Chelsea, Arsenal and Barcelona have reportedly also expressed their interest in the player, though reports suggest that the Red Devils are leading the race for his signature.
On Thursday, Manchester United confirmed the transfer of Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven for a reported £25 million, suggesting the club are keen to get business done early.
