Manchester United suffered their sixth home defeat of the Premier League season after losing 3-1 to Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon.

Result: Manchester United 1-3 Brighton and Hove Albion

Date: 19 January 2025

Venue: Old Trafford

Red Devils coach Ruben Amorim made two changes from the win over Southampton as Diogo Dalot and Joshua Zirkzee replaced Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund.

For the second game in a row, the visitors took the lead at Old Trafford as a swift counter attack ended with Kaoru Mitoma unselfishly tees up Yankuba Minteh for the close-range finish on five minutes.

United were afforded the chance to get back on level terms on 20 minutes after being awarded a penalty for a foul on Zirkzee. Bruno Fernandes stepped up and calmly dispatched the spot-kick to level matters.

That proved to be the final chance of the first half for both sides, who struggled to carve out openings despite the high tempo being played in the final 15 minutes.

However, Brighton started the second half in similar fashion to the first by re-taking the lead on 52 minutes when Joao Pedro fired home from close range after the ball fell kindly in his path but the goal was ruled out for a foul after a VAR check.

The visitors were not to be denied on the hour mark as Minteh sent a superb ball to the far post where Mitoma was on hand to turn home despite the best efforts of Noussair Mazraoui.

Brighton were then gifted a third goal with 15 minutes left on the clock as Andre Onana's horrible handling error allowed Georgino Rutter to sneak in and fire into an empty net, ending any hopes of a United comeback.
