Result: Manchester City 2-0 Sheffield United

Date: 30 December 2023

Venue: Etihad Stadium

The Citizens were still without top scorer Erling Haaland, although Kevin de Bruyne was named on the bench as the Citizens looked to close the gap on league leaders Liverpool.

The home side got off to a dominant start but had to wait until the 14th minute for the opening goal when Rodri found the back of the net with a thumping strike.

Pep Guardiola's charges dominated proceedings in the first half but with United defending deeps with numbers, the found it tough to carve out clear-cut chances and were restricted to efforts from distance.

The visitors managed to carve out a chance five minutes before the halftime break, but defender Manuel Akanji produced a vital block to deny William Osula.

Guardiola was forced to make a change five minutes after the break when Jack Grealish picked up a knock after collision and was replaced by Oscar Bobb.

However, Sheffield's resolve was broken on the hour mark as a neat passing move ended with a Phil Foden teeing up Julian Alvarez to tap home at the far post for his second goal in as many games.

The latter stages of the second half proved to be a quiet affair, as Sheffield only made one foray forward in the final five minutes but they were unable to fashion an opening.

The win takes City up to second spot on the table after Aston Villa dropped points against Burnley.
