Liverpool Reclaim Top Spot With Late Win At Anfield

Liverpool move back to the top of the Premier League

Liverpool reclaimed top spot in the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over Sheffield United on Thursday night.

Premier League

Result: Liverpool 3-1 Sheffield United

Date: 04 April 2024

Venue: Anfield

While Arsenal and Manchester City rested some players on Tuesday, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp went with his big guns as usual, although Andrew Robertson remained on the bench.

The game got off to a lively start as United's James McAtee was denied by Caoimhin  Kelleher at the far post, while Mohamed Salah saw his curling effort tipped over the crossbar at the other end.

Liverpool were gifted the opening goal on 17 minutes when goalkeeper Ivo Grbic's clearance was charged down by Darwin Nunez and sailed into the back of the net for his 11th league goal of the campaign.

It was one-way traffic in the first half, as the visitors struggled to deal with Luis Diaz and Salah down the flanks, while full-back Conor Bradley also had a lot of joy down the right flank.

The Blades came out with a bit more purpose in the second period and got their reward in the 58th minute when Bradley invertedly deflected the ball into his own net after some good work by Hamer.

Klopp responded with a double change two minutes later as Salah and Ryan Gravenberch made way for Harvey Elliot and Robertson, the visitors threw on William Osula, Ben Osborn and Ollie McBurnie at the same time.

Liverpool went close to restoring their lead in the 65th minute when Virgil van Dijk got on the end of a corner with a powerful header, which forced a superb save out of Grbic.

The hosts managed to get the second goal in the 77th minute when Alexis Mac Allister latched onto a loos ball on the edge of the box and sent a powerful strike into the top corner.

Liverpool sealed the win in the 89th minute substitute Cody Gakpo nodded home a cross from Robertson, sending Klopp's charges back to the top of the Premier League.
